GALLOO REFUGEE SQUAT, CALAIS

October, 2014

The Galloo squat was opened in 2014 in a former aluminum reclamation facility in Calais. At its peak the 12,000m space it became home to more than 300 refugees who were drawn to Calais by the chance to cross the Channel to the UK. The squat was raided by French police about a month after I visited and all the occupants were evicted.  There were reports that 66 people were arrested and around 40 of them were taken to the detention center in Coqulles. There is now security on the premises.
