JUSTE DEBOUT, LONDON

February, 2011

Sometimes you just get lucky. I was wandering around Kings Cross when I came across a group of young men standing smoking on Euston Road. They were French and they told me they were in London to compete in Juste Debout, a French originated hip hop dance competition that has heats in various countries. I paid my entrance fee and walked in to another world. The Victorian community centre made an incongruous backdrop to the event. In one wood-panelled room kids stretched and warmed up before taking to the floor outside. There was a chaotic energy that was addictive. I shot these using the Leica M9 with off-camera flash. I was still experimenting with the technique and it was hit and miss (mostly miss). But the effect of the flash suited the subject perfectly I think.
